The Boston Bruins lose their first home game in 2026 with a 4-2 loss against the San Jose Sharks.

Through the majority of this game, the Bruins struggled to net their first goal, and by the time they got on the scoreboard the game was already out of reach.

Despite the Bruins outshooting the Sharks to start the game, San Jose scored the lone goal of the first period. Six minutes into the game, San Jose’s second line took over the puck in the neutral zone. Charlie McAvoy tripped near the blue line as San Jose moved into Boston's zone, and Michael Misa scored on a 2-on-1 assisted by William Eklund.

Boston stayed out of the scoresheet again in the second period. They continued to lead the game in shots on goal, yet the Sharks scored the only goal of the period. Mason Lohrei was called for a high-sticking penalty, and the Sharks scored on the man advantage with Tyler Toffoli netting an open goal after a shot from Maklin Celebrini.

Down two goals, the Bruins received an early power play opportunity to net their first goal of the game. However, Boston allowed a short-handed breakaway, and the Sharks extended their lead with a goal from Collin Graf.

Five minutes later, Eklund added to San Jose's lead batting a puck out of the air off a self-created, second-chance rebound.

Boston responded with a goal from Frasier Minten, and the rest of the game saw the Bruins trying to play catchup.

It took the Bruins until the final minute of the game for them to score another goal, as David Pastrnak cut San Jose's lead back to two goals. A penalty from McAvoy iced the game and finalized the score.

The Bruins lost the special teams battle, allowing a power play and shorthanded goal while also going 0/2 on the power play. San Jose goalie Alex Nedeljkovic played a key part in the win for the Sharks, stopping 39/41 shots on goal in the win.

Despite winning puck battles and spending a quality amount of ice time in their offensive zone, the Bruins didn't get lucky bounces to go their way, and the Sharks made the most out of their opportunities with their young stars filling the stat sheet.

The Bruins will now travel to Washington D.C. to take on the Capitals on Saturday. Puck drop on ABC will be at 3 p.m.

PREGAME NOTES

The Boston Bruins look to continue their home winning streak with a matchup against the San Jose Sharks.

In a rare after trade-deadline move, the Bruins acquired Navrin Mutter from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forwards Dalton Bancroft and Massimo Rizzo. Trades can occur after the NHL trade deadline, but the players acquired can't be added to the NHL playoff roster. Massimo Rizzo was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers during last week's trade deadline.

Narvin Mutter has appeared in 27 games with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) this season, recording one assist. The 6-foot-3, 213-pound forward has skated in 149 career AHL games with Milwaukee and Stockton, totaling four goals and 16 assists for 20 points. The Lucan, Ontario, native was originally signed by Nashville as a free agent in 2022.

David Pastrnak will be in the lineup for the Bruins despite missing today's morning skate. Pastrnak and his wife Rebecca welcomed their second daughter today.
