The Boston Bruins fall to the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 in the second game of a home-and-home series.

Despite losing by one goal, the difference in competition was more lopsided.

In the first period, the Bruins allowed two goals. Despite outshooting Detroit, Boston allowed multiple stretch passes, which resulted in the first goal of the game.

Midway into the first, former Bruin James Van Riemsdyk received a stretch pass into Boston's defensive zone and scored the first goal for Detroit.

Following the first goal, the Red Wings cycled the puck in their offensive zone, and Moritze Seider gave the Red Wings their second goal on a one-time shot from the point.

Much of the same continued into the second period. The Bruins played flat-footed at the start, and Detroit added onto their lead.

Boston finally turned things up. Johnathan Aspirot scored his first career goal on a one time shot, and Alex Steeves followed to the game to a one goal difference.

However, the Red Wings responded with a goal from Ben Chiarot on a poor play from Jeremy Swayman and Boston's defense.

Detroit then came out to another strong start to the period scoring a power play goal two minutes into the third. After Detroit's third goal, Swayman was pulled for Joonas Korpisalo.

The Bruins responded with two late goals from Marat Khusnutinov and Steeves, but it was too late to get a comeback started.

Boston will head back home to take on the Blues on Thursday. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m.

PREGAME NOTES

The Boston Bruins play the second game of a home-and-home series against the Detroit Red Wings.

Boston won the first game at TD Garden 3-2 in a shootout. Morgan Geekie scored two goals and upped his goal total to 20.

David Pastrnak will miss his third straight game. “We gotta be careful with him,” coach Marco Sturm told reporters. “He’s not skating this week, so I don’t expect him to play this week. He definitely needs a few practices or a few skates, I would say.”

Boston activated Viktor Arvidsson from injured reserve. He will been today's lineup.
