What to watch for: The Boston Celtics return home for the first time since before the All-Star break. They went 3-1 on their West Coast road trip immediately after the break.
The Brooklyn Nets play them well. Their physicality and one-on-one defense stand up well against Boston’s ball-handlers. Jordi Fernandez game plans well against the Celtics.
Tale of the tape: Boston has played Brooklyn three times this season.
In the first, the Celtics took down the Nets in Brooklyn, mounting an impressive comeback in the fourth quarter. Then, the Nets came to TD Garden and got the best of Boston.
And in their last showing, the Celtics squeaked out a win over the Nets in double overtime thanks to an Hugo Gonzalez three-pointer in the first overtime and an Amari Williams block in the second overtime.
Last game: Boston will be looking to wash the taste of its last game out of its mouth. They lost by 19 points, largely due to a huge run by the Denver Nuggets in the third quarter.
Despite a decent offensive process, especially early on, the Celtics couldn’t make their open shots. And when they were trying to make a comeback late in the game, the shots still weren’t falling.
Standings check-in: The Celtics are still sitting in second place in the East, 5.5 games back of the first-place Detroit Pistons. Meanwhile, they remain 1.5 games up on the third-place New York Knicks and two games up on the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Nets check-in: The Nets are one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference, but that’s right where they want to be. They’ll have a chance (at a chance) to draft Darryn Peterson, Cam Boozer, or AJ Dybantsa in the spring.
In the meantime, they’ve been developing their youngsters. They’re 2-8 in their last 10 games and have lost six games in a row in the process, though.
Michael Porer Jr. has led the Nets in scoring lately (as he has all season), but he’s been in a rut from an efficiency standpoint. In his last eight games, Porter is averaging 19.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists while shooting 40.6% from the floor and 20.3% from deep on 8.0 three-point attempts per game.
Rookie Nolan Traore has been playing well, averaging 13.3 points and 5.8 assists in his last 10 games. Danny Wolf, a fellow rookie, has also been earning more minutes. In his last 10, he’s averaging 10.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.
One fun play: This is some great spacing by Baylor Scheierman.
Jaylen Brown sets a screen for Derrick White to go into a hand-off, and Neemias Queta immediately rolls to the rim. This forces Christian Braun to help off Scheierman.
But look at where Scheierman spaces to. He’s not right at the three-point line. Instead, he shifts over to the wing, and he’s a few feet behind it. This makes Braun’s closeout much harder, and he drains the open (but deep) three-ball.
